1-5-4 Triple Play



Nancy and I were out at Autumn's softball game on Saturday night. This game by the way was pretty exciting by the way. In our three years of Carlsbad girls spring ball, fall ball, and All Stars, we have never seen quite an exciting game. Many times we had witnessed close games, but never quite like last night.


Autumn's team was up 9-8 in the bottom of the ninth. The opposing team had last ups, and after three straight batters, we found that the bases were loaded. I thought "Oh my god, here we go again", as we had lost many close games before late in the game.


I turned my head to look at the game going on behind us on the other field, as there was quite a bit of hooting and hollering going on over there, and I was sure we were going to lose this game, so I thought I would be OK to look away for a bit. But I was wrong, and I missed the play of the year on our field. Bases loaded, the batter at the plate. What came next was pretty amazing. Our team pulled a 1-5-4 triple play. It was incredible. The ball was hit directly to the pitcher, threw to third, and then to second. Their coach was too aggressive and had the baserunners pretty far off the bags. They had no chance to touch up. Nobody say it coming, or could even remember another triple play in recent history. It was great (or so Im told.. Bad dad), and the girls were elated. Even more so when they found out that the mom with snack duty that night brought pizza!!! Pretty fine.
So, after such a dramatic game, Nancy and I needed a drink, and that will segue into my next entry............

Congratulations to Autumn and her team. It sure does sound exciting. Please explain the meaning of 1-5-4. I understand the throwing of the ball to get runners out but not the numbers. I'm not much of a sports expert, son. PS I love your use of my new favorite word, segue. Love to you all.

the ball was hit directly to the pitcher (1), who threw to the thirdbaseman (5) who threw to the secondbaseman (4) for the triple play.

Nancy and I went to the store for some beer and wine (and Ben and Jerry's of course) following Autum's game, and stopped in at the local Blockbuster. I found a great film. Beer Wine and Sports

Last week found me travelling to Seattle to do some work. I flew in on Wednesday to SEA/TAC to find a very pleasant day. Not a cloud in the sky, and just a nice, brisk temperature. It is refreshing to me to be in this type of weather, especially after nearly 10 years here in Southern California, where we really have just two seasons. These being Summer, and then the rest of the time. I was there, from a IT perspective, to close three Cosi stores. None of the locations are really in Seattle. They are in the outlying cities of Mill Creek, Redmond, and Woodinville. While Cosi is really well known on the East Coast, everyone there loves it, but outside of that, it seems to be difficult to market, and the brand is infrequently recognized. Wiebe Goes For It

If anyone took my suggestion and saw the documentary The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters, they name Steve Wiebe would ring a bell. He was the world record holder of Donkey Kong for a while, until Billy Mitchell's score was submitted, via mail on a videotape. Steve Wie be is the competetor you would want to root for. He always vied for the title in a live environment, in a real arcade, with spectators all around. Billy never seemed to participate in live tournaments, but instead opting for videotaping his game and submitting it to Twin Galaxies , the governing body of classic video gaming, including overseeing the journal of high scores. Twin Galaxies had previously denied a videotaped submission from Steve Wiebe, which would have blown away Billy's standing record. They cited the fact that the tape had left Wiebe's possession, that it could have been altered, and therefore deemed inadmissible.
