Last week found me travelling to Seattle to do some work. I flew in on Wednesday to SEA/TAC to find a very pleasant day. Not a cloud in the sky, and just a nice, brisk temperature. It is refreshing to me to be in this type of weather, especially after nearly 10 years here in Southern California, where we really have just two seasons. These being Summer, and then the rest of the time. I was there, from a IT perspective, to close three Cosi stores. None of the locations are really in Seattle. They are in the outlying cities of Mill Creek, Redmond, and Woodinville. While Cosi is really well known on the East Coast, everyone there loves it, but outside of that, it seems to be difficult to market, and the brand is infrequently recognized. I was here a couple years ago, as a rookie in the POS league, installing the Woodinville location. If anyone took my suggestion and saw the documentary The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters, they name Steve Wiebe would ring a bell. He was the world record holder of Donkey Kong for a while, until Billy Mitchell's score was submitted, via mail on a videotape. Steve Wie be is the competetor you would want to root for. He always vied for the title in a live environment, in a real arcade, with spectators all around. Billy never seemed to participate in live tournaments, but instead opting for videotaping his game and submitting it to Twin Galaxies , the governing body of classic video gaming, including overseeing the journal of high scores. Twin Galaxies had previously denied a videotaped submission from Steve Wiebe, which would have blown away Billy's standing record. They cited the fact that the tape had left Wiebe's possession, that it could have been altered, and therefore deemed inadmissible. So it turns out that I have some sort of OCD. Sometimes it is apparent and other times, not so much. Perhaps no one has ever noticed. But my wife sees it occasionally. And once in a while, it causes issues...... It is mild in nature and this particular OCD has to do with food. God knows I have food issues. Try growing up in a household where certain foods are sacred, and where there are so many mouths that when dinner is gone, it's over. There was no more. What was made was all that was available. You had to eat as much as you could, as fast as you could. What was served for dinner was what was for dinner. There was no making your own if you didn't like what was served. This was the same household where the Doritos bag had a secret fold, impossible to duplicate, and was "hidden" in the oven. Nancy and I went to the store for some beer and wine (and Ben and Jerry's of course) following Autum's game, and stopped in at the local Blockbuster. I found a great film. It is a testament to just how nerdy and obsessed I was with video games growing up. The film is a documentary by the name of The King Of Kong . I was thrilled to see guys my age, even dorkier than myself with a passion for something society had us believe, was a waste of time. The central focus is on the arcade classic, Donkey Kong, and a couple willies trying to become the Guinness world record holder for high score. While that in itself may not sound too exciting, the story is real intense, and it will have you engrossed in the characters, and story line. I highly recommend this film if you can get your hands on it. So this movie has inspired me to blog here a little bit. Growing up, video games were a huge part of my day, and my life. Nancy and I were out at Autumn's softball game on Saturday night. This game by the way was pretty exciting by the way. In our three years of Carlsbad girls spring ball, fall ball, and All Stars , we have never seen quite an exciting game. Many times we had witnessed close games, but never quite like last night. Autumn's team was up 9-8 in the bottom of the ninth. The opposing team had last ups, and after three straight batters, we found that the bases were loaded. I thought "Oh my god, here we go again", as we had lost many close games before late in the game. I turned my head to look at the game going on behind us on the other field, as there was quite a bit of hooting and hollering going on over there, and I was sure we were going to lose this game, so I thought I would be OK to look away for a bit. This has got to be the clip of the week. This is a freak accident; Richard Zednik gets it pretty good here. His teammate, falling to the ice, inadvertently severs Richards neck. Tim Reynolds for the AP writes: Zednik remained hospitalized 1,350 miles away in Buffalo, where his condition was upgraded to good on Tuesday and doctors planned to take him out of an intensive-care unit. Zednik isn't believed to have suffered any long-term brain or nerve damage, and one surgeon described him as "very lucky." "It's a sign of how good medicine can be and how good medical people can be," Panthers coach Jacques Martin said Tuesday as the team skated for the first time since the accident, which became the NHL's dominant topic. Wow, it only took one day, and I have to say that I really dont know how to feel about it. Steve Kerr , GM of the Suns has shipped Shawn "The Matrix" Marion and Marcus Banks to Miami for a 35 year old, beat up Shaq. At first glance, it seems like the big man will be out of place with the fast paced, run and gun offense that the Suns have been playing for the last 3 1/2 years since Steve Nash came to town. But on second thought, god knows we need a big man. We really need a center that can clog up the middle, and make life miserable for the opposition. I guess time will tell. Shaq told Steve Nash, "I wont let you down." I just hope Shaq's body doesn't let HIM down.

Seriously, we all utterly despise Eli Manning around here in San Diego for his snubbing of the Chargers and going to the Giants..... Looks like he turned out just fine. Being a Cowboys fan, and being in the NFC East, I am not a fan of the Giants, Redskins, or Eagles. So I was torn as who to root for. I kind of wanted to see the Pats go undefeated, but at the same time did not want to have to hear it from all the bandwagon Pats fans. I couldnt stand to see Junior Seau get a ring, after "retiring" from football, playing for the Chargers for what seemed like a lifetime, and then signing with the Pats later that same week.
